My name is Taryn, I'm 25, and I've just gotten back to the States after teaching English in Tokyo for a year. I have a fairly useless degree in Japanese from Penn State University, and am currently back to searching for jobs again. I really like foreign languages, and I've also studied German, Korean and Mandarin, but I've forgotten a lot from not using them. I don't like owls of any variety.

This is where I (seldomly) post stuff that's too long for Facebook, but too short for LJ. You're welcome.

ただいまー

So my original plan of using Tumblr to make updates about what I was doing while in Japan failed, because I’m super lazy when it comes to internets.  My bad.  I’m actually back home now, my teaching contract was up at the end of March and I decided not to renew it for another year.  Teaching English was a great experience, and I loved being able to live in Urayasu again, but it’s a really dead-end job.  The pay is crap and there’s literally no possibility of advancement, so it’s really not something that you want to spend more than a year or two on.

Of course, now that I’m back, I’m reminded of why I left in the first place.  Oh hi, failing economy!  A degree in Japanese is pretty much pointless around here, and there aren’t any jobs for people with experience, much less entry-level ones.  At least for the time being, Kaz and I are living rent-free at my parents’ house, but the job market is just really bleak.  I’d try to get another supplementary degree at the community college, but I don’t even know where to start.  I have no idea what programs a) would lead to a job, and b) I’d be good at.  I hate this unemployment limbo so much. =/

I could go on for ages about that, but I digress.  In less crappy news, we got to go to Mexico with my family last week, which was really nice.  We didn’t do as much as when I was there in 2008, since we didn’t rent a car this time and it’s really too hot to do much of anything besides sit by the pool or the beach.  The only two days we didn’t just hang out at the resort were when we went snorkeling and when we went to Xcaret, an eco-park near Cancun.  I had a great time overall, despite getting terrible sunburn from swimming in the ocean the day before we left and getting sun poisoning or something when we were at Xcaret.

I guess that’s about all I have to update about right now, just figured it was worth mentioning that I’m not in Japan anymore.  Cheers~ :O
